The biennial Trade and Sustainable Development Symposium, organised by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and held alongside the WTO ministerial conference for over a decade, is the leading multi-stakeholder platform for intellectual enquiry and dialogue on sustainable development and the global trade and investment system. It acts as an inclusive platform outside of the WTO negotiating setting for sharing ideas, engaging in dialogue, and influencing trade policy negotiations. Drawing in participants from government, business and civil society, the Symposium helps to maintain and elaborate a global vision of sustainable development in trade and investment policymaking.

Sustainable International Agricultural Trade and the Key Role of Latin America

Latin America plays a major role in the challenge of providing food for the 9 billion people who will inhabit the world by 2050. One of the key issues related to this challenge is how the region will meet these demands for increased agricultural production and at the same time improve and disseminate a productive system that respects the environmental and cultural diversity and wealth present in its territory.

The path to be taken to address the challenge of feeding more people and save more resources might be indicated by the Agenda 2030, the commitments made in the Paris Agreement and the growing development of Voluntary Standards of Sustainability. However, it is up to us as a region to discuss and establish how we are going to tread this path towards a sustainable international agricultural trade.
