The biennial Trade and Sustainable Development Symposium, organised by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and held alongside the WTO ministerial conference for over a decade, is the leading multi-stakeholder platform for intellectual enquiry and dialogue on sustainable development and the global trade and investment system. It acts as an inclusive platform outside of the WTO negotiating setting for sharing ideas, engaging in dialogue, and influencing trade policy negotiations. Drawing in participants from government, business and civil society, the Symposium helps to maintain and elaborate a global vision of sustainable development in trade and investment policymaking.

Alejandro Sánchez has been Counsel at the ACWL since 2010. As Counsel, he has assisted developing countries in WTO dispute settlement proceedings and has advised on a broad scope of WTO legal issues.Prior to joining the ACWL, Mr. Sánchez served for four years as legal advisor at the Office of the General Counsel for Trade Negotiations in the Ministry of Economy of Mexico. In that capacity, he provided legal advice on a wide range of matters related to the WTO, NAFTA and other Free Trade Agreements signed by Mexico. Mr. Sánchez was also directly involved in the litigation of several WTO disputes on behalf of Mexico as well as in proceedings on trade-related matters before Mexican domestic courts.Mr. Sánchez holds a law degree with honorary distinction from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara and a Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) from McGill University.
