The biennial Trade and Sustainable Development Symposium, organised by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and held alongside the WTO ministerial conference for over a decade, is the leading multi-stakeholder platform for intellectual enquiry and dialogue on sustainable development and the global trade and investment system. It acts as an inclusive platform outside of the WTO negotiating setting for sharing ideas, engaging in dialogue, and influencing trade policy negotiations. Drawing in participants from government, business and civil society, the Symposium helps to maintain and elaborate a global vision of sustainable development in trade and investment policymaking.

His Excellency, Ambassador Chiedu Osakwe is the Chief Trade Negotiator for Nigeria and the Director-General of the Nigerian Office for Trade Negotiations. He is the Chairman of the Negotiating Forum for the Continental Free Trade Area Negotiations and its Technical Working Group on Trade in Services. Prior to this, Ambassador Osakwe served in the WTO for 19 years as a member of Senior Management, including as Director of the Divisions of Accessions, Doha Development Agenda Special Duties, Textiles and Technical Cooperation, as well as Special Coordinator for LDCs, and Head of the Secretariat and Inter-Agency Working Group on the Integrated Framework for LDCs in the Office of the Director-General. He retired from the WTO Secretariat on 8 September 2017. Ambassador Osakwe served as a Nigerian Foreign Service Officer from 1979-1998, serving at the Permanent Missions of Nigeria to the United Nations in New York (1983-1986) and the GATT/WTO (1993 1998). Ambassador Osakwe was educated at the University of Ibadan – Nigeria, University of Oxford, and New York University, from where he obtained his PhD. He has published extensively on Trade Policy, negotiations, structural reforms, the Rule of Law and good governance and co-edited books on WTO Accessions and the rules-based Multilateral Trading System.
