The biennial Trade and Sustainable Development Symposium, organised by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and held alongside the WTO ministerial conference for over a decade, is the leading multi-stakeholder platform for intellectual enquiry and dialogue on sustainable development and the global trade and investment system. It acts as an inclusive platform outside of the WTO negotiating setting for sharing ideas, engaging in dialogue, and influencing trade policy negotiations. Drawing in participants from government, business and civil society, the Symposium helps to maintain and elaborate a global vision of sustainable development in trade and investment policymaking.

Claire Nouvian is an environmentalist dedicated to protecting the ocean and Claire Nouvian is an environmentalist dedicated to protecting the ocean and livelihoods from destructive fishing practices. She is particularly renowned for her commitment to putting an end to deep-sea bottom trawling. In 2004, she founded the nonprofit organization BLOOM specializing in research, education and advocacy for the ocean and sustainable fishing. In 2013, BLOOM developed a petition against deep-sea bottom trawling which has collected nearly 900,000 signatures, making it France’s n°1 environmental petition in History, and triggering the largest deep-sea fishing fleet in France to commit to disengaging from all forms of deep-sea fishing by 2025. Claire used to work in television production and journalism. She put together the book The Deep (translated into 11 languages), and the eponymous exhibition, which is traveling the world and has already attracted over 2.5 million visitors. Claire Nouvian lectures on environmental political science, public subsidies in fisheries, and communication strategy.
