The biennial Trade and Sustainable Development Symposium, organised by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and held alongside the WTO ministerial conference for over a decade, is the leading multi-stakeholder platform for intellectual enquiry and dialogue on sustainable development and the global trade and investment system. It acts as an inclusive platform outside of the WTO negotiating setting for sharing ideas, engaging in dialogue, and influencing trade policy negotiations. Drawing in participants from government, business and civil society, the Symposium helps to maintain and elaborate a global vision of sustainable development in trade and investment policymaking.

Danny Leipziger is Professor of International Business and International Affairs, George Washington University, and Managing Director, the Growth Dialogue, a network dedicated to examining the issues of sustainable and shared economic growth. He is former Vice President of the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network (2004–09) at the World Bank. Dr. Leipziger has taught at GWSB since 2009, focusing on macroeconomics, financial markets, managing in developing countries, and international monetary affairs, and drawing students from GMBA, ESIA and the university more generally. He has organized seminars and conferences at GW and the World Bank, with governments, the OECD, other universities and think-tanks and he is often seen in the media on issues of globalization, innovation, and international outlooks. He is a frequent contributor to Project Syndicate, VoxEU, the Financial Times, and other media outlets.

Over the course of his 28-year career at the World Bank, he has held management positions in the East Asia Region and the Latin America and Caribbean Region as well as in the World Bank Institute. Prior to joining the Bank, Dr. Leipziger served in senior positions at the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Department of State. He also has been a Vice Chair of the independent Commission on Growth and Development (2006-2010). Dr. Leipziger is a member of the WEF Futures Council on Growth and Social Inclusion, and he is a board member of the Korea Economic Institute and GW’s CIBER.
