The biennial Trade and Sustainable Development Symposium, organised by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and held alongside the WTO ministerial conference for over a decade, is the leading multi-stakeholder platform for intellectual enquiry and dialogue on sustainable development and the global trade and investment system. It acts as an inclusive platform outside of the WTO negotiating setting for sharing ideas, engaging in dialogue, and influencing trade policy negotiations. Drawing in participants from government, business and civil society, the Symposium helps to maintain and elaborate a global vision of sustainable development in trade and investment policymaking.

George Rapsomanikis is a Senior Economist in the FAO Trade and Markets Division. His research focuses on issues related to food price volatility, food security, and small-scale agriculture development. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Reading and has authored over fifty journal articles, working papers, book chapters and notes, including work on commodity price bubbles, price transmission, volatility spill-overs, and the relationship between food and energy markets. Since 2011, he has supported the G20 and the G7 in their discussions on global agriculture and food security. He has been a Technical Editor of the State of Food Insecurity in the World, 2013-15 (SOFI), and of the FAO Commodity Market Review (2007-08, 2009-10). Currently, he is undertaking preparations for the State of Agricultural Commodity Markets, 2018 (SOCO) which will analyse the linkages between agricultural trade, food security and climate change.
