The biennial Trade and Sustainable Development Symposium, organised by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and held alongside the WTO ministerial conference for over a decade, is the leading multi-stakeholder platform for intellectual enquiry and dialogue on sustainable development and the global trade and investment system. It acts as an inclusive platform outside of the WTO negotiating setting for sharing ideas, engaging in dialogue, and influencing trade policy negotiations. Drawing in participants from government, business and civil society, the Symposium helps to maintain and elaborate a global vision of sustainable development in trade and investment policymaking.

Shishir Priyadarshi, a senior Director of the World Trade Organization, is an international expert on Trade and Development. He heads the Development Division of the WTO, whose mandate is to facilitate work on all trade related developmental issues in the organization.
A significant part of Mr. Priyadarshi's responsibilities extends to taking care of all the work relating to the LDC group of countries, especially in monitoring the implementation of various measures that are taken by Members to help them integrate in to the multilateral trading system. He also oversees the work on special and differential treatment, which is another important pillar of the LDCs work in the WTO.  He is also responsible for the Aid for Trade work in the WTO, which presently has a lot of focus on helping LDCs and countries in Africa.
Mr Priyadarshi has over 35 years of national and international experience.  He has worked closely in formulating and implementing developmental programmes all over the world and has been instrumental in helping some of the weaker and more vulnerable countries enhance their gains from the multilateral trading system.
He has written a large number of papers, primarily analysing, assessing and detailing the concerns of developing countries in the context of global trade, especially South-South trade.  He is a visiting faculty in a number of universities and business colleges.
