The biennial Trade and Sustainable Development Symposium, organised by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and held alongside the WTO ministerial conference for over a decade, is the leading multi-stakeholder platform for intellectual enquiry and dialogue on sustainable development and the global trade and investment system. It acts as an inclusive platform outside of the WTO negotiating setting for sharing ideas, engaging in dialogue, and influencing trade policy negotiations. Drawing in participants from government, business and civil society, the Symposium helps to maintain and elaborate a global vision of sustainable development in trade and investment policymaking.

Vanesa Lowenstein
Ms. Lowenstein is an experienced researcher. She has been awarded with the Chevening scholarship for United Kingdom, the World Intellectual Property Rights Fellowship, and a grant from the Max Planck Institute. She is a researcher at the Centre of Interdisciplinary Studies of Economic and Industrial Law (CEIDIE), University of Buenos Aires, Law Faculty, and at the Latin American Faculty of Social Science. She also is a regular professor at Tres de Febrero University, for the Master on International Economic Relations, in the Intellectual Property Seminar. She has published extensively, and addressed issues such as the interface between intellectual property and investment, biotechnology and development, and access to environmental technologies.
Vanesa Lowenstein currently works at the National Board of Science and Technology in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Argentina, on the definition and articulation of Science and Technology state policies, particularly in respect to intellectual property and international negotiations. From April 2008 to July 2004, Lowenstein Coordinated the Intellectual Property and Environment Area, of the Agro-alimentary International Relationship Department at the Agriculture Ministry. From February 1999 to July 2004 she worked at the Intellectual Property Department of the Trade and Industry Secretariat, from the Economy Ministry.
